8-5-12 Nelly's 27% Airwild Edge 540 Control surface modification
Here's today's venture...
I figured since I have Nelly's 27% Airwild Edge in the shop awaiting a
crankshaft.... I would fiddle around with it and look it over good.....
it needs some upgrades on the setup....
Yeah, the surfaces are single beveled, since I really didn't know much about
hinging when I put my first ARC together 4 years ago..... Nelly has kinda outgrown
the throws that we had on it.... .... Especially after flying the Katana with nice sweet
throws on the surfaces.....
I did some shaving of the stab side and put in a 1/4" deep bevel on top so far......
I figured it it would have been a no-go, I would just glue some balsa
back on sand it, and put it back to where it was..... but...
I think this will be OK... plenty of meat where the balsa rear
hinge caps are at on the back of the stabs themselves.....
plus, I put in dowels about 2" deep into the foam cores, for the
robart hingepoints as I was still in my "over-building" technique stage....

Final status on Both Elevators....
both elevators matched within a degree or two before and
match even better afterwards...
Here's where we were before the modification: (hinge line max'ed out)

Now, the mod:
Here's where we are now.....
I measured the throws that Nelly has been flying on in the past...
roughly 33* Up and 22* Down, which is the max.....
I'm gonna slap some 1-1/8" servo arms on and set her up on low rates for
the 33* up and 22* Down with the current expo, like she had,
and then on High, I'll give her a max of 45* or a little less, depending on what
the 1-1/8" arms will travel...Of, course mixed with Futaba's negative Expo to soften
up the stick centers like my Edge, or her Katana.....
(I'll know for sure where to put the "high's" once I fly it)
Needs a final touch-up with a little sanding block, and then I can patch
the covering on the modified spots back up.....
Next up, Rudder... It definitely needs more there too! (single bevel also)
Full throttle knife, it's about all it will do to stay level and not lose altitude.....
she wants to do those slower alpha knives like the Katana will do.....
I'll hook her up yet........

8-5-12-----------So far, so good....
Here's the throw on the rudder, before beveling the front side of the hinge...
No wonder... 22 degrees... not a whole lot .....

Hinge lines are sanded and ready to be covered....
Rudder can achive about 47* each way before it tries to hit the elevators now....
Much more gooder, for sure!

8-7-12 Elevator and Rudder Hingelines are recovered!

Ailerons are next in line for the modification.... but that will wait untill after this weekends
fun-fly..... Will post an update on how the increased throws on the tail feathers worked out....
